Dear friends,

We are happy to announce that the registration to the Belonging Conference is now open.

The Belonging conference is a joint initiative of AKIM Israel and Inclusion International. The two-day conference will be held on November 24-25, 2019 at the conference center of the David Intercontinental hotel in Tel Aviv.

The aim of the conference is to explore ways of turning up-to-date perceptions of the person centered approach into public policy that supports people with intellectual disabilities and promotes their inclusion and right to choose, in the spirit of nothing about us without us.

AKIM Israel, similar to other organizations around the world that are united under the auspice of Inclusion International, works in the last decade to advance the person centered approach. At the heart of the approach lies the recognition of a person's sovereignty to lead his life as he chooses, voice his desires and fulfil his potential within his community, much like every other member. We operate vigorously to include our people in the Israeli society in every aspect of life: employment, housing, education, the army and leisure activities.

At the conference we will present success stories from Israel and the world such as the transition of 900 persons from institutions to community living; personal programs; employment in the free labor market; recent reform of the guardianship capacity law; self-advocates leadership; personal budget pilot; inclusive education and more.

In addition, we will showcase innovative programs and initiatives in fields of culture, education and leisure; technological developments; accessible healthcare etc. All of which reinforce and promote the person centered approach and the value of inclusion into the community.

We will also address the issues of abusing people with intellectual disabilities and #metoo as well as the ways to fight it through self-advocacy.

Best practitioners and researchers in their fields will present at the various sessions and people with intellectual disabilities will share their personal stories.

We are certain that you will enjoy an interesting and valuable conference, as this is a wonderful opportunity for learning, leading and inspiring each other.

We wish to thank our partners Inclusion International, the Disabilities Bureau at the Ministry of Labor, Social Services and Social Affairs, Israel Elwyn, M.D.P community, institutional and private housing, the Shalem Fund and the Commission for Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Justice.

We look forward meeting you at the conference as presenters and participants, teaching and learning.
